Both Dotel and Carmen are capable of eating multiple innings only using Carmen to back up JJ is next level silly. Especially when you consider that outside of his bad outing the other day, he’s one of the better arms in a pen that is struggling. I don’t understand how Carmen and Dotel are not interchangeable. Bringing him in when the team is down by 5 makes no sense unless you are expect the offense to put up a big number and get you back in the game.

Great article. At least Kelly noted after Mlod's last outing that his use may change. Let's hope Kelly follows through because right now it's frustrating watching Jones dig holes and then Mlod stuck in low-leverage, low-adrenaline situations.

Nice piece.

I had envisioned a point where the Pirates' depth of pitching would be impossible to get around... Even using a next man up system with numerous guys who could go three innings...

But it hasn't happened.

I wonder who the next legit guy up in Indy is. They surely need help.

It's almost like the Ozuna situation. Adding him made little sense but you could hold out reasonable hope he would hit for his contract. And he hasn't.

If they're not going to use him, I wonder if they could trade mudge as a starter to someone and pick up two or three good relievers.
